Beta Prototypes of Improved Euthanasia Chamber to Support Commercialization

Project 20-004 - John van de Vegte, OMAFRA

The use of technology to manage carbon dioxide levels throughout a euthanasia cycle according to AVMA guidelines is critical to provide humane, repeatable and low stress process. Real-time measurement of carbon dioxide levels within the euthanasia chamber ensures that the carbon dioxide gas flow rate does not exceed levels where aversive reactions on the part of the pigs can occur. The chamber design and software updates implemented and tested through this project improved the system robustness and ease of use. It is currently possible to produce additional chambers of the same design to fulfill market demand.
