Successful Veterinary Sharps Disposal Event Returns to Ontario Pork Congress

The Industry and Member Services (IMSV) team would like to thank our sponsors and volunteers for their contribution to make the 2023 Ontario Pork Congress (OPC) Sharps Disposal event a success. After a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sharps disposal booth made a triumphant return to OPC. Considering the prolonged closures caused by the pandemic, it was expected that the volume of sharps collected for disposal this year would surpass previous records.

During the first day of OPC, a remarkable 23 cardboard boxes (each box accommodating six to eight 2 L bins) filled with sharps were collected. The second day added another 13 boxes, bringing the total for the 2023 OPC Sharps Disposal event to an impressive 36 boxes over the two days.

Looking ahead, the IMSV team is already planning to build on this year's triumph by hosting another sharps disposal event in 2024. Given that the 2023 OPC marked the first event since the pandemic, there is strong anticipation that next year's event may have an equally high volume of sharps, as not all producers were able to take advantage of the opportunity this year.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the following esteemed partners for their generous sponsorships of the 2023 Sharps Disposal Event:

  • Ontario Pork Congress
  • South West Ontario Veterinary Services
  • Demeter Veterinary Services
  • Goshen Ridge Veterinary Services
  • Ontario Pork

Through collaboration and dedication, we can ensure the safe and responsible disposal of sharps, contributing to the well-being of both industry professionals and the environment. The IMSV team looks forward to continuing this vital initiative in the years to come and extends a sincere thank you to all who made this year's event possible.
