Nitrogen euthanasia using a Dutch commercial unit – miniNOFF

Although blunt force trauma is a recognized/accepted method of euthanasia for piglets by veterinary associations and the industry, farm staff are frequently reluctant to perform this type of euthanasia. Staff may become distressed due to the violent jerking motions prior to death of some piglets. This may leave a psychological impact on staff who must observe the animals to ensure they have reached the stage of death.  Commercial carbon dioxide euthanasia units are used on some farms but carbon dioxide can be noxious to swine and can result in vocalization and struggling. Lethal injection is only available under veterinary supervision and is costlier.  Nitrogen induces a "narcosis" that rapidly renders animals unconscious and results in death if administered for sufficient time. This project will use a commercial euthanasia device, used in the Netherlands, on piglets <3.5 kg. The unit currently uses a mix of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which requires a custom blend. Nitrogen alone is readily available in tanks at farm supply centres, thus ensuring ease of tank replacement. This project will test if straight nitrogen gas is an effective and humane euthanasia option for pigs and compare this gas to results using carbon dioxide.
