Beta Prototypes of Improved Euthanasia Chamber to Support Commercialization

Project 20-004 - John van de Vegte, OMAFRA

An initial prototype of an improved euthanasia chamber for non-viable piglets was developed and tested under Ontario Pork Research Project 18-005 in order to reduce the stress experienced by the piglets and stockpeople during the euthanasia process. The prototype chamber performance testing conducted at a sow/farrowing farm did demonstrate the unit was successful. The ultimate objective for the development of this technology was to make it commercially available for all Ontario producers. This project proposal covers the next phase of euthanasia chamber development in order to fully prepare it for commercial release. It involves the execution of a system design update to address issues noted during testing of the initial prototype system. Thereafter, six beta prototype euthanasia chambers will be built. Five units will be used to conduct confirmatory performance testing on farms while one unit will be retained for demonstration and presentation purposes avoiding biosecurity concerns.
