Do you have a plan if an emergency strikes your farm? Disasters can happen anywhere and can include barn fires, hazardous material spills, disease outbreaks, extreme weather occurrences, prolonged power outages, gas leaks, truck accidents, and personal injuries.
Being ready for an emergency is important for everyone, but it is essential for those who raise and care for livestock.
While planning for an emergency, that (hopefully) may never happen, might seem like a big job — and it is — having a completed on-farm emergency plan for all of your premises will help you more easily navigate through an emergency.
Don’t worry, help is here.
This summer, Ontario Pork, Swine Health Ontario (SHO) and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) are working jointly to assist producers in developing their on-farm emergency plans.
A team of dedicated individuals can help you develop a personalized emergency farm plan. They can walk you through the planning process, provide more information, create a labelled site map of your property and help you identify the best area for on-farm disposal.
The team is available now through the end of August and is happy to answer all of your questions. Email emergplans@ontariopork.on.ca today to book time with one of our planners.
Ontario Pork has a resource to help you work through everything you should consider in building your own on-farm emergency plan.
Don’t wait until an emergency happens, when you and the industry are overwhelmed. Complete your on-farm emergency plan or contact Ontario Pork today. Support is offered on a first-come, first-served basis — so don’t delay!
