Root Beer Pulled Pork... our most popular recipe

In honour of March Break, we’re giving you a break from intensive food preparation, with our #1 recipe for several years – Root Beer Pulled Pork. 

A single pork shoulder roast will easily feed a small crowd, which makes this a go-to choice for busy households crowded with March Break guests – young or old. Here’s how easy it is to make:

1) Place a pork shoulder in your slow cooker for 8-10 hours on LOW, along with 2 cups of root beer.
2) Remove pork shoulder onto a cutting board and shred the pork with two forks. With adult supervision, your kitchen helpers can assist with this step.  
3) Return the pork to your slow cooker and add your favourite barbecue sauce. Stir until well combined.
4) Serve on buns with coleslaw or crispy onion straws

Kids will love this tasty, messy meal, and parents will love knowing they are serving a great source of protein that is easy on the budget.  Everyone will love the flavour!

Expert tip: Stick with pork shoulder, rather than a pork loin or tenderloin for juicy, delicious pulled pork. Pork tenderloin is a lean cut of pork that has many great uses, but pulled pork is not one of them.

Yield: Serves 6
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 8 to 10 hours - in slow cooker



  • 1 Ontario pork shoulder
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 16 fl oz (500 mL) bottled root beer (not diet)
  • 2 cups (500 mL) your favourite BBQ sauce
  • 6 Kaiser or hamburger buns, split and lightly toasted

Cooking Instructions:

  1. Place the pork and onion in a slow cooker. Pour the root beer over the pork, cover and cook on LOW until well-cooked and the pork shreds easily, usually 8 - 10 hours (or 4 - 5 hours on HIGH).
  2. Drain well and discard extra root beer. Stir in BBQ sauce.
  3. Serve on buns with coleslaw.
