Canada Pork Council Semi-Annual Meeting |
|
Clare Schlegel provided a review of the background on the new governance structure for the Canadian Pork Council (CPC). The new structure requires two members from Ontario to attend the regular CPC Board meetings which are expected to occur between six and eight times a year. It was suggested that the new Board structure will function like the current Executive Committee structure. The other key component of the new structure is plans for an annual policy conference to be attended by all provincial board directors.
Clare spoke to the need for increased communications between the provinces and national with an emphasis on achieving efficiencies. The Board indicated support that the representatives to CPC should be duly elected Board Directors and considered the impact of Ontario’s marketing transition on participation at the national level.
It was agreed to hold an election to name the two representatives to CPC who will serve until the spring when Ontario Pork holds elections for all appointments and positions. Wilma Jeffray and Bill Wymenga were elected. |

Preliminary Implementation Plan |
|
|
A draft index structure for the Preliminary Implementation Plan for Ontario Pork was circulated. Updates will be presented at each Board Meeting, and that the Management Team is meeting weekly to discuss.
Upon reviewing the document, enforcement and marketing fees/value of fees were identified as possible additions to be considered in the plan.
It was confirmed that the document will be shared with the Hog Industry Advisory Committee. |

Ontario Pork Activities |
|

A universal services priority list was presented to the Board Directors. Members were to indicate for each item listed how important this service is to maintain. The data will be compiled and re-circulated to the Board. It was reported that the western provinces are also being surveyed to establish what universal services are being provided and at what cost.
The Board considered the competitive environment suggesting that Ontario is not competing with the western provinces but rather with Quebec and the US. It was explained that the purpose of surveying the western provinces is to get a better understanding of the comparisons made during the hearing and to learn from their experience as Ontario prepares to transition to an open marketing environment.
The Board considered business intelligence as a service, and discussed what information (beyond standard market information) should be made available to producers to help them make their business decisions.
The Competitive Factors Committee is to make a recommendation to the Board as to what information services should be provided to producers to make them successful. |
