The following are highlights from the January 28-29th, 2008 Ontario Pork board meeting.

YEAR END FINANCIALS
The 2007 Financial Statements were approved.  Peter Barr from Deloitte and Touche LLP was present to provide a summary of the audit process.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MINUTE MOTIONS
Wilma Jeffray provided an overview of the Executive Committee minute motions for the 2008 Annual General Meeting including councillor compensation, registration fees and suspension of the 2008 Industry Award of Merit program.

CANADA PORK COUNCIL REPORT
Clare Schlegel spoke about on-going CPC lobby initiatives and the federal government's lack of support.
CPC is trying to stay in contact with NPPC and deal with any potential trade action. Proposed demonstrations at the constituency offices of Harper and Ritz is under discussion with the provinces.
There was discussion of a Targeted Advance Program in Ontario and its possible impact of slowing down OCHHP program cheques..
An overview of the CPC Restructuring initiative – Integrated Industry Model was presented.  The challenge has been to communicate to producers what CPC does.  Communication and program delivery are a few of the issues that need to be addressed.  A board meeting in Toronto in early February will review Touma/Bouma documents for further discussion and planning.  Consensus versus majority rule as well as funding are not addressed at this stage.

HOG MARKETING COMMITTEE
Jean Howden presented a Decision Item on the Hog Marketing Committee.  The Board discussed the role of committees, the role of the Hog Marketing Committee and the role of the Board.

LAMPTON COUNTY COUNCILLOR APPOINTMENTS
Lambton County had three councllors step down. Matt Hall, Anna-Lee Straatman, and Roger Buurma have been appointed as councillors and Corry Van Gorp and Pete Wammes as alternates.

SAFETY NETS

The various programs - Kickstart, CAIS and OCHHP were discussed.
The Board discussed concerns about the gaps with the OCHHP and the potential gap in leadership if new, young producers are being missed.  It was noted that producers should be encouraged to send a letter to Ontario Pork if programs are missing them and to utilize appeals processes available to them.  Call the sources, get names, numbers, titles to follow-up.
Continue to encourage government for the timely payment regarding OCHHP and maybe pursue an application process for people who “fall through the cracks”.
If a rally is to be pursued it would be an opportunity to connect with fellow producers.  There are many challenges associated with a rally.  Coordination and organization is essential for success.
The messaging around safety nets and next steps regarding lobbying were also discussed.
It was duly moved and seconded that Commodity Council move forward on production insurance for livestock, adjustment to margin due to disease, and APP adjustments.
