Influenza A-(H1N1) Related Information and Contacts

Regarding the Virus:

An outbreak of severe respiratory disease in Mexico has been attributed to a new strain of swine influenza virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) will refer to the new influenza virus as
influenza A(H1N1) .  The virus that is circulating includes genetic components of human, avian and swine origin.  While the human outbreak appears to be spreading from person to person, the role of this virus in swine and other species, and its potential impact, are currently unknown.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is asking pork producers, veterinarians and labs to increase their vigilance in monitoring for and reporting swine disease. The agency is asking that suspected cases of illness in pigs should be reported to veterinarians, provincial authorities or the CFIA.

The federal government has a telephone hotline for information about the swine flu outbreak. The phone number is 1-800-454-8302.

Regarding Trade:

The World Health Organization (WHO) and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) have jointly communicated that there is no justification for trade measures to be imposed on pork or pigs that can be attributed to this flu virus; Based on assessment of currently available evidence it is not the intent of Canada to introduce unwarranted restrictions on the import of live swine or pork; and the flu virus of concern here is a human, not an animal, virus.

Note: For producer information on flu vaccination please visit our Producer Resources page and look under the Regulations and Safety section.  There you will find a link to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care's letter to swine industry workers as well as helpful signs you could post in your barn to help prevent the spread of the flu virus.
