Ontario Pork News Brief
This is a daily briefing of current Ontario Pork initiatives and activities. Briefings will be emailed to those producers who have given Ontario Pork a valid email address and a compilation of these briefings will be sent out in hardcopy to all producers by regular post each week.
Whenever possible producers will be directed to website links and/or phone numbers for more information. This is to help reduce printing and mailing costs. If you require additional resources on an individual basis Ontario Pork will be pleased to provide them to you.

Ontario Pork Progresses to Open Marketing
Ontario Pork got out of the starting gate aggressively from the May 13th decision from the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to deregulate Ontario’s hog industry. Preparation for the new environment is underway with divisions being established for Ontario Pork Universal Services and Ontario Pork Marketing. The Farm Products Marketing Commission (FPMC) has the task of providing the regulatory amendments that will be needed to implement the Minister’s decision on governance and marketing. The regulatory amendments will identify the three mandatory actions for industry players – producers, processors, transporters and marketers:
- mandatory price reporting so Universal Services can report price in aggregate form to the industry;
- remittance of fees; and
- submission of information to support traceability.
Ontario Pork is also participating in the newly constituted Hog Industry Advisory Committee (HIAC) bi-weekly meetings that began August 10th. The Committee is Chaired by Jim Clark from the Farm Products Marketing Commission and members include Wilma Jeffray, Mary Ann Hendrikx and Ken Ovington from Ontario Pork, Cathy Aker of Maple Leaf Consumer Foods, Dan Cohoe of Quality Meat Packers Ltd. and Bob Hunsberger of Conestoga Meat Packers. The Committee can advise and make recommendations to Ontario Pork, processors and the FPMC as the industry transitions into the new environment.
A Financial Protection Program for the industry is still being investigated and that topic will be discussed by the producer voting members at Ontario Pork’s Policy Day September 17th. Ontario Pork will also be providing additional communication materials on the pending changes on that day.
The deadline for the Minister’s order is December 4th.
