Funding for the Risk Management Program was announced in the spring 2011 budget. Since that time, commodities including cattle, edible horticulture, grains and oilseeds, hogs, sheep and veal have been working closely together with the government to finalize details. Our members asked for and helped to build this program. The province is delivering based on the needs and input of the various commodities.
Some of the details include:
Given that the program is insurance-based and multi-commodity in its nature, we believe it is consistent with our current trade obligations.
Premiums will be waived in the first year (2011) of the program.
Applications to the program began in September 2011 with payments scheduled to begin as early as December 2011 pending application review.
Farmers may enroll in more than one RMP program if they meet the eligibility requirements.
We expect that every segment of production will receive a benefit and we encourage all farmers to participate in the program.
