PRODUCTION STANDARDS

Ontario’s hog farmers are committed to sound farming practices.  In Ontario, 98% of hog farmers are enrolled in the Canadian Quality Assurance (CQA®) program that uses production protocols and detailed records to monitor farm activities such as feeding and medication. The CQA® program is the pork industry's on-farm food safety program.  No hormones are used in any hog production and antibiotics are only used to treat disease.  Pigs are fed a balanced diet that includes vitamins and minerals consisting primarily of grains (corn, grain and soy).  The majority of farms use vegetable grain fed diets.  Pigs are natural omnivores and their diet requires high levels of protein.  Almost all pigs are raised in barns for their protection from the elements and other animals.
