Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission
The Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission (OFPMC) is an agency of the Government of Ontario. The Commission is often referred to as the supervisory body of Ontario’s agricultural marketing boards. Ontario Pork is one of twenty marketing boards set up under the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Act. The Act delegates to the OFPMC the power to set up and supervise marketing boards. The OFPMC, in turn, delegates powers to individual marketing boards. The powers delegated to Ontario Pork are outlined in Ontario Regulation 439/10 and 403/10, and amendments.
On May 13th, 2010 the Honourable Carol Mitchell, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs provided her decision regarding Ontario Pork’s marketing authority and governance structure and concluded that producers can choose to sell their hogs directly to buyers or through an intermediary, such as the Ontario Pork Marketing Division, that offers marketing services to its members.
