ENVIRONMENT

Pig farmers are particularly conscious of the environment.  They practice environmental stewardship and comply with regulations outlined by the Ministry of Environment when it comes to water, nutrient management and greenhouse gases.  Ontario Pork on behalf of its pig producers works cooperatively with all government agencies to provide input and review of regulatory proposals and practices.

  • Over 26,000 Ontario farmers have completed Environmental Farm Plans (EFP) since 1993.
  • Ontario farmers have contributed more than $42 million to implement their EFPs and have undertaken 358,734 hours in unclaimed labour to implement their plans.
  • Ontario farmers must be trained and certified to purchase and use pesticides under Ontario’s Pesticides Act – they have reduced their use of pesticides by over 40% since 1983.
